Are you really saying that the next presidential election should be based on policy, not "saving democracy?" I think you've forgotten the attempted insurrection of January 6th. Name one other time this has happened in America. It hasn't. The main thing we need to discuss is how to stop the next insurrection, which might succeed. Listen to Trump, he's basically outlining a more thorough insurrection if he gains power again. Voting is basic to Democracy. If people think the election system is corrupt (as they have been incorrectly claiming with no evidence) then, America does end. Trump has already tried to keep power despite losing. You may be tired of hearing about it, but now is not the time to ignore the truth; kicking election deniers out of office really does make this the most important election of our times in 2024.
A very monumental question that you ask, yet there are no responses from the incumbents or the opposition. The Republicans are running on fear of the unknown and making the unknown more palpable than answering simple questions of what are you going to do. The Democrats get lost in all the latest little issues that keep coming up from the loose knit crazies the Republicans are enticing, rather than speak to how to move on and not get lost in the details. Like gossip, everyone knows it is hateful and often wrong, but everybody loves to participate. So in spite of pointing out the obvious, people will run to the one issue they see as most near and dear to them, no matter how stupid it might seem to base an election on one single item. This appears to be what they are doing and Democracy is being dismantled as a result. Pointing it out in very simple terms I think is spot on, maybe someone will take it to heart!
I watched the November 18 Iowa Press program. You do such a great job of asking the right questions ... in this case of the 2 college poly sci professors. You ask the questions that others don't! Thanks for getting to the "meat of the matter" and asking questions that others want to hear the responses.
Nancy, thank you for your comment. I updated the column largely because of you.
