“Credible death threats.” This isn’t, “You suck.” This is, “You should die.” U.S. Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks, the 1st District Ottumwa Republican, went public with reports that she received threats on her life after she refused to back Ohio Representative Jim Jordan — Donald Trump’s pick as the next U.S. speaker of the house — in the second round of voting Wednesday.
Great post. Unfortunately Trump normalized the use of violent rhetoric and threats as a means of political combat. Many people in positions of authority, from school board members to poll workers to members of Congress, have found themselves in the crosshairs. According to Mitt Romney, some U.S. senators voted to acquit Trump in his impeachment trial (even though they thought he was guilty) because they were afraid for themselves or their families.
I was saddened, yet not surprised, at the lack of public response from our other representatives and senators. Their silence implicitly supported bullying and terrorism.
This should have been a much more reported story. The lack of a response from her Republican colleagues and the Democratic side shows how bad of situation our country faces. Unfortunately, I don’t know if we have ANY leaders capable of bringing us together. Such a toxic environment.
Where did the hate come from? Why are not all Iowans calling the death threats out? The DMN Register ran an article in today's Sunday edition, on the front page, reporting about people wanting to execute Covid 19 doctors. Where does this hate come from? So sad. Don't let fear and hate win. Stand up and speak out.
